PROCEDURE GUIDE

How Do I Prepare for
Breast Augmentation?

To prepare for your Breast Augmentation surgery at the SixSurgery, please read the following instructions. It is also important that you familiarize yourself with the various aspects of the recovery phase after your surgery and ensure that there is someone who can stay with you for the first 24 hours.

If you need clarification on any of the following instructions, or you have a question that is not answered by the information below, please contact us and one of our staff will be ready to help you.

Two (2) Weeks Before
Breast Augmentation Surgery:

  • Stop all blood thinner medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, advil, coumadin, warfarin, plavix) and supplements (omega-3, fish oil, garlic, vitamin E).
  • Stop smoking (even a single cigarette can have an adverse effect on your recovery and overall outcome of your augmentation surgery). Cigarettes contain nicotine and carbon monoxide, amongst a list of many poisonous substances. Carbon monoxide prevents oxygen from being delivered to your cells, and therefore suffocates healthy, healing tissues while you are trying to recover from your surgery. Nicotine is a substance that causes your blood vessels to constrict, thus making it more difficult for your body to deliver blood, oxygen and nutrients to the healing breast wounds. These effects slow down healing and make you more susceptible to infection, wound breakdown, and many other complications after surgery.
  • If the SixSurgery team requested that you have any tests performed prior to your surgery, you should have all your blood work and test results done and forwarded to SixSurgery for review no later than 2 weeks prior to your surgery.
  • Make arrangements for transportation to and from the surgery.
  • Make arrangements if you need someone to look after your children on the day of your surgery (e.g., pick up from school).
  • All payments for the surgery should be completed at least 3 weeks prior to your surgery date.

One (1) week Before
Breast Augmentation Surgery:

  • Pick up your prescription (as given to you by the SixSurgery team) from your pharmacy.
  • Stop drinking alcohol.
  • Please let us know if you have a cold or any other infections, as they will need to be treated and resolved before your augmentation surgery.
  • Stop the use of any oral contraceptives pills (birth control)
  • Inform the SixSurgery team if you are taking any prescription medications to see if they need to be stopped before surgery.

One (1) Day Before
Breast Augmentation Surgery:

  • Prepare loose clothing to wear to the clinic and/or to change into after surgery. You do not need to bring a bra to wear after your surgery, as a sports bra or a surgical bra will be given to you.
  • Prepare a small recovery pack to bring to the clinic containing important items, so that you do not have to worry about these after your surgery. This pack might include a water bottle, simple dry snacks, ID (e.g., driver’s license), some cash and a credit card, for example.
  • Continue taking all medication that is prescribed to you, except for blood thinners (if unsure, please consult with our nurses or the SixSurgery team). ).
Have nothing to eat 12 hours prior to your surgery time and no fluids 8 hours prior to your surgery time, this includes water.
  • Any nail polish or artificial nails are removed
  • All jewelry needs to be removed

Day of the
Breast Augmentation Surgery

  • Take a shower, and wash using basic soap and water. There is no need for any special cleansing soaps or shampoos.
  • If you are having Breast Augmentation through the armpit (Trans-Axillary), please shave your armpits (if unshaven).
  • Do not apply any body lotion or antiperspirant.
  • You can brush your teeth, but do not drink any water (with the exception of small sips of water with medications).
  • Do not take any diabetic medication.
  • Do take your blood pressure medication if you are prescribed any.
  • Bring all your medications (including those the SixSurgery team has prescribed for you) to the Royal York Hotel surgery facility.
  • Arrive at our facility two hours prior to your scheduled surgery time to allow our nurses to check you in, give you any medication that may be required, and to allow you to relax in our pre-surgical room.

Your Scheduled Time of Surgery

On the day of your procedure, you will arrive 2 hours before the scheduled time of surgery. The exact time of your surgery will be determined a week prior; although we roughly know the schedule for that day weeks ahead of time, we sometimes have to re-arrange the schedule to accommodate the needs of different patients or staffing of the Operating Room.

Patients with type 2 diabetes, for example, are operated on first to allow for better blood sugar control. (please note we do not accept type1 diabetics) Regardless of when your surgery is tentatively scheduled for, plan on taking the entire day off. If, for example, your surgery is scheduled in the afternoon, do not attempt to do anything in the morning, just try to relax.

Preparing for Your Recovery After Surgery

Since Breast Augmentation is an outpatient surgical procedure, following your surgery you will be released to either go home or to recover in one of our luxurious hotel rooms in the Fairmont Royal York Hotel (at an additional charge). Whether you go home or stay in the hotel, you will need to have a capable adult stay with you for the first 24 hours. You cannot be left alone during the first night after your surgery, and more importantly, you should not be walking without assistance during the first 24 hours.

During this time, you may be prone to fainting, falling, and hurting yourself. In the event that you wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, you must also wake up your companion. You are not allowed to go to the bathroom by yourself during the first night after your surgery.

If you are unable to find anyone that can stay with you, we are able to provide you with a Personal Support Worker who will make sure you are safe and comfortable. There is an additional fee for this service.

We made recovery easy for you. Visit RecoveryMarket for SixSurgery approved recovery gear. You can find everything you need from high-quality gels to support bras.
