Synopsis:

When it comes to lip injections, it is imperative that you choose an experienced injector! By choosing an injector at a reputable clinic, with proven results, you can achieve a natural, beautiful result! At SixSurgery we make sure you are in the hands of one of the experts in the field. Our highly skilled injectable nurses have years of experience and have distinguished themselves with their work.

Injecting filler is a fairly quick procedure that is done on awake patients. Most patients do not require any freezing or pre-treatment, but we do offer a numbing cream or nerve block for our more anxious patients.

Using ultra-fine needles, we inject biodegradable Hyaluronic Acid Fillers into the lips for natural, long lasting and beautiful results. In addition to adding volume to the lips, these fillers can also be used to create a more defined cupid’s bow, and even make small changes to the natural shape of your lips. Our team is highly experienced and skilled in performing this procedure to artistically create volume, shape, symmetry and proportion in the lips where none existed before.

Why Lip Injections

The key to beautiful lips is getting good work done by an experienced injector. The goal to a successful result of lip fillers is a natural look.

Picking an highly skilled injector is a key for natural – looking results. At Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute we make sure you are in the hands of one of the experts in the field. Our highly skilled injectable nurses have years of experience and have distinguished themselves with their work.

If any of the following effects concern you, you may be an ideal candidate for a Lip Augmentation at the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute:
  • Your lips have always been thin and seem to disappear when you smile
  • As you have aged, your lips have become thinner and less full
  • You feel self-conscious about how your lips look
  • Having fuller lips will help balance out your face

Every year, thousands of people undergo a successful lip enhancement and are pleased with the results. However, if your lips are too large and overwhelm your face, you may not be a suitable candidate for Lip Fillers and might instead consider a Lip Reduction surgery.

What are Lip Injections

Lip augmentation with filler injections will add fullness, balance and body to your lips, and give you that softer, sexier look you desire. Lip injections are done on awake patients. Most patients do not require any freezing or pre-treatment. Some patients who are anxious about needles can be pretreated with a numbing cream or nerve block. If you would like a pre-treatment, please let us know about it at the time of the booking of your lip augmentation, so that we can schedule an additional 15-20 minutes to your appointment (the amount of time it takes to pre-treat your lips).

Studies show that wider, fuller lips and well-defined borders are widely considered to be attractive. At the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute, we therefore offer a non-surgical lip enhancement. In this treatment, ultra-fine needles are used to inject biodegradable Hyaluronic Acid Fillers into the lips for natural, long lasting and beautiful results. The SixSurgery team is highly experienced and skilled in performing this procedure to artistically create volume, shape, symmetry and proportion in the lips where none existed before.

I can’t say enough about Dr. Jugenburg and his very attentive staff. They also have a very beautiful, luxurious, comfortable clinic, but it’s the care that’s important.

What to Expect

Lip Fillers are a safe and natural way to enhance the volume, contour, definition and overall shape of your lips for a fresh, natural, new look. Besides creating the lips you have always wanted, treatment can improve the signs of aging by addressing your lips’ texture and smoothness, and filling the lines and wrinkles that are caused by smoking and/or pursing the lips over time.

  • Vertical lines (or lipstick bleed lines) and smile lines can be softened by enhancing the edge of the lips
  • Creation of a natural contour for the lips through the restoration or enhancement of the volume of the lips
  • Lifting the edges of the lips to restore their youthful position
  • Create a stronger, more beautifully defined Cupid’s bow (below the philtrum column)
  • Treating the area underneath the mouth (the marionette area) to provide support to the lip, thereby improving shadows and the profile of the lower face

Who Performs
Lip Injections

Our injectable nurses Glenda and Elizabeth have been performing injectable treatments for several years at other cosmetic clinics and have distinguished themselves with their work, which is why Dr. Jugenburg has hand picked them to join him at the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute. Since joining our clinic, both Glenda and Elizabeth have been tutored by Dr. Jugenburg, and continue to attend professional courses to further expand their injectable skills and knowledge. Glenda and Elizabeth now perform all of our injectable treatments.

Are you a Candidate?

As part of the natural ageing process, the composition of our lips and surrounding tissues alter. From the peak of fullness in your 20’s, your lips begin to change:

  • The volume of your lips depletes, leaving a thinner, flatter appearance.
  • Wrinkles and fine lines appear, and the vermillion borders (the dark pigment of the lips) and Cupid’s bow (or philtrum column – the double curved shape of the upper lip) become less defined.
  • The area around your mouth and between your upper lip and nose can become flattened.
  • Other factors such as gravity, genetics and smoking can cause the corners of the mouth to turn downward or droop, creating a tired, aged appearance.
  • At this point, even those who were born with perfectly beautiful lips may want to consider a lip enhancement.

If any of the following effects concern you, you may be an ideal candidate for a Lip Augmentation at the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute.

Procedure

  • Getting Assessed

A typical lip augmentation appointment is scheduled ahead of time. First you will meet with the SixSurgery team for an assessment. You should not have any fillers in your lips at this time (if you have had recent lip injection elsewhere and want us to correct your lips, we recommend either melting the existing filler away ($350/treatment) or letting it absorb first). Avoid taking any blood thinners that may increase your risk of bruising and swelling for two weeks before your treatment (Aspirin, Advil, Ibuprofen, Fish Oils, Omega 3s, high fish diet). If you had any cold sores in the past, please let us know ahead of time. We’ll prescribe medication for you to take prior to your treatment to lower the risk of the injections triggering the cold sore virus from coming back (the medication lowers the risk, doesn’t make it 0%).

  • Day of The Treatment

You will come in to meet with the SixSurgery team. If you need a pre-treatment, this can be arranged. If you are looking to have a numbing cream used, we will apply it and allow it to sit on your lips about 15-20 minutes before doing the treatment. If you wish to have a nerve block (completely freeze your lips), an appointment will have to be scheduled with the SixSurgery team who will perform the block by injecting a local anesthetic that will completely freeze your lips for an hour.

Typically, there is no need for pre-treatment with a numbing cream or nerve blocks. Lip Augmentation takes approximately 10 minutes. You will first be given a small ice pack to apply to your lips to cool them down. This acts to numb the nerves so that the treatment is as comfortable as possible. The cold also causes blood vessels to constrict, therefore significantly decreasing swelling and bruising after the lip injections.

  • Treatment

The treatment itself is relatively simple. During the procedure, we inject a small amounts of Lip Filler (Juvederm, Teosyal or Restylane) directly into your lips. We use both regular needles and blunt cannulas (the decision which is best to use depends on your lips and what you wish to achieve). The choice of a filler will also depend on your existing lips and what you are trying to achieve. We carry various products by Juvederm and Teosyal for lip enhancements. The injection itself takes about 5-10 minutes.

  • After The Treatment

We recommend you stay in the clinic and apply an ice pack for a further 10 minutes. This is once again to help minimize bruising and swelling. However, you should expect to have some slight swelling, which usually resolves during the first 2 days after treatment. Most people can return to work immediately and full written aftercare instructions will be given to you.

For 95% of patients, this swelling is minimal and only you and people who know you well will know your lips are swollen. 5% of patients can get an excessive reaction leading to significant swelling. This is a temporary condition and WILL settle, although first time this happens to a patient they are often very concerned. Using ice packs and Benadryl helps to speed up the resolution of the swelling. You don’t need to worry, because ALL patients recover from this unusual swelling.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Youthful skin is naturally rich in Hyaluronic Acid, a substance that binds to water, thereby giving it volume, hydrating the skin, and promoting the softness and fullness of the face. As we age, the Hyaluronic Acid has a weaker effect, leading to a loss of volume and facial wrinkles. Used widely in general medicine, over 30 million people have been treated with Hyaluronic Acid worldwide. When injected, the Hyaluronic Acid is eventually absorbed and broken down by the body. Results therefore last from 3 months in very mobile areas, such as the lips, up to a year in regions, such as the nose or cheeks.

Many options are available in Lip Fillers, with clinical differences being predominantly governed by how long the effects last and how the filler feels. There are some Hyaluronic Acid Fillers that help to smooth and improve hydration of the lips, while others have more volumizing properties that can contour the lips, correct asymmetry, and plump up tired and deflated lips subtly. At the Toronto Cosmetic Institute, we use only the latest brands of Hyaluronic Acid Fillers to give softer, more natural results and cause less discomfort and bruising to our patients. During your consultation, the SixSurgery team will recommend which of the brands Juvederm®, Teosyal® or Restylane® will be most suited to your specific needs. Such Lip Fillers may differ slightly in terms of consistency (thickness), durability and cost, but all contain non-animal derived Hyaluronic Acid, and are Health Canada approved, safe and effective. Once injected, these substances will lift, add volume, and help diminish fine lines for long-lasting results.

Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid-based Fillers:
  • Proven safe and effective – approved by Health Canada
  • Provides instant improvement to the lips
  • Quick and easy procedure (take less than 20 minutes), there is no downtime
  • Soft, natural results
  • Temporary effects (the product is reversible/biodegradable) that can be easily corrected if you are unsatisfied with the results

Am I a good candidate for a lip enhancement?

If you are in good general health, have a positive attitude and realistic expectations, you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure at our clinic.

The following are some common reasons why you may consider a lip enhancement:
  • Good candidates for a lip enhancement want to plump up thin lips or create a fuller look.
  • Lip Fillers can improve uneven lips, the shape of your mouth, and the symmetry of the gum-show when you smile.

Who should not have a lip enhancement?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have history of severe allergies, you should not have this treatment. People with certain connective tissue disorders may also be at a higher risk of side effects.

Are there any side effects from using Lip Fillers?

Side effects are rare but can include redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising and discoloration at the injection sites. These effects typically resolve spontaneously or within 1 to 2 days after treatment.

What can I expect on the day of my treatment?

Injections with Lip Fillers can be performed with little to no downtime and minimal preparation. Your nurse will prepare the area to be treated and take precautions to minimize your pain. The procedure should take less than 20 minutes, and you will be given instructions to follow once you leave the clinic.

Do injections in and around the lips hurt?

Injections in the lips can be uncomfortable; however, at our clinic we use a topical anesthetic cream that numbs the lips so that the needle prick cannot be felt. For almost all of our patients, this is sufficient and no other treatment is needed to counter pain. If necessary for patients who are particularly sensitive, we can inject a local anesthetic (or freezing) to completely numb the lips and surrounding areas and temporarily remove all feeling.

Will my lips be swollen after the treatment?

Following your lip injection procedure, you will have some swelling; however, swelling is normally minimal and barely visible. It is recognizable only in the fact that the day after your procedure when the swelling subsides, you may notice that your lips look marginally smaller than they appeared immediately after the injections. Dr. Jugenburg’s patients rarely experience any bruising or excessive swelling that temporarily makes it obvious they had a lip enhancement done.

How long does the enhancement last?

The enhancement from Hyaluronic Acid Lip Fillers generally lasts for about 6 to 9 months. The exact time varies between patients and the type and amount of filler that is used. Since Hyaluronic Acid is completely absorbed and broken down by the body over a period of months, a retreatment session is recommended every 6 months to maintain results.
